Answering some good questions….

Quite understandably, community members are wondering why they cannot use the Community Centre and yet the film company can. This rental situation has happened in a very short timeframe- from hearing of the prospective rent opportunity last Wednesday to signing the contract on Friday. We will try harder to keep you current as this is of utmost importance to all of us, and please do not hesitate to ask questions of concern.

The Board decided that would be acceptable for the film company to rent the Community Centre from July 27-31 because:

1.  The timing was perfect as we are in-between finishing the window installation and doing the interior Glulam beams and ceiling work.

2.  The film company is supplying their own HVAC system, washrooms, and all other equipment and supplies for the duration of use.

The Board decided that the benefit of gaining $25,000 was worth the rental for 5 days since there is absolutely no negative consequence or delay to the Capital One or any other repairs at the Centre.

The Community owners cannot use the Centre because our HVAC is out of commission. This fact alone prevents us from using the pool, even for a few days, as ordered by the City of Burnaby.

We realize it is very frustrating for community members not to see any work being done or to be able to use the pool over this very hot summer. The thing is, these kinds of multifaceted community projects, which include engineers, drawings, scope of work, meetings with contractors, quotes, contracts, material choices, and much more, take months before there is visible change.

The following Capital One repairs are scheduled to be done from now to November- if you look into the pool area, you will see progress being made.

-Replace rotten wood on the south wall then install new pool area windows

-Remove the old HVAC- the new HVAC will be installed outside the building at the southwest end of the pool area

-Repair the glulam beams- interior (remove rust from metal plates and paint) and exterior (reinforce beams), refinish the ceiling boards (remove mould)

-Install the new HVAC (limiting factor as this will not be available until mid-October due to manufacturing delay- this is a custom item)

-Resurface the pool basin and deck (remove the old deck, prepare for and apply new surface and allow time for the new surface to cure. Resurfacing will take at least 2 weeks. See the Coquitlam Aquatic Centre to know what our new deck will be like- we think you’ll love it.

During all that time, several repair and maintenance jobs will be worked on in other parts of the Centre. And there have been some surprises- for example, as of yesterday, we discovered that roots have blocked the sewer pipe leading from the Centre to the manhole in the middle of Birchwood.

We hope you now understand why the film company can use the Centre even though we cannot.  We really do appreciate your support and patience while we are all waiting for that first swim.
